TRAINING STAFF & PHILOSOPHY

Our elite volleyball training staff is comprised of the very best and most experienced available players and coaches in the northeast region.  Besides being professional and semi-professional athletes and decorated high school, club and collegiate coaches, our staff is comprised of well-educated role models who believe that the commitment and discipline required to become an accomplished volleyball player should translate beyond volleyball and prepare each athlete for a healthy, productive and successful life outside of sports.


Wayne Holly (Director)

Wayne has been in the sport of volleyball for 19 years as a player and coach.  As a volleyball player, he began learning the game in 1989 on the beaches of Rhode Island and within a year began competing in tournaments throughout the northeast.  He has competed as an open level semi-pro beach volleyball tournament player for more than 15 years up and down the east coast and in more than forty cities throughout the United States.  In 2006, he began competing full-time on the AVP Professional Beach Volleyball Qualifier Tour and earned career high finishes at the AVP Atlanta Open (2006); AVP Louisville Open (2007) and AVP Esurance Tampa Open (2007).  He continues to train for and play in select AVP Pro Beach qualfier Tour tournaments throughout the country.

As a coach, Wayne is currently the Head Boy’s Volleyball Coach (2nd year) and Assistant Girl’s Volleyball Coach (2nd year) at Chariho High School in Rhode Island.  At the club volleyball level (USA Juniors), Wayne is head coach of the R.I. Blast Boy's 18 Black Club Volleyball Team and head coach of the CT Velocity Girl's 18s Invitational Team.  Wayne is also a former head coach of the CT Stars Girl's 16s Club Team.

In 2008, Wayne became director of the Northeast Volleyball Training Academy and a regular instructor of the specialty clinic, Speed, Balance & Agility for Volleyball.  Wayne is also a volleyball camp clinician with experience in Connecticut College pre-season high school volleyball camp hosted by the 
Connecticut College Women's Volleyball Program.  Wayne is IMPACT certified as a volleyball coach by USA volleyball and is Red Cross/First Aid certified as well.  He is currently seeking certification as a strength and conditioning coach.

Wayne holds a Juris Doctorate degree and has a B.A. degree in philosophy and political science.  He is the author of the nation’s leading book on bankruptcy fraud and operates his own law practice when he is not training for or playing volleyball.

Chris Safford

Chris has been involved in the sport of volleyball for more than 20 years as a high-school and collegiate player, coach and clinician.  As a Chariho High School volleyball player, Chris was one of the most dominate players in Rhode Island boy’s volleyball history and was a perennial First Team All Stater at the setting position.

Between 1991 and 1994, Chris was a four year varsity letter winner and starting setter for the Springfield College Men’s Volleyball Team.  During his collegiate playing tenure, Chris helped lead Springfield to a Division I top 20 ranking in 1991, two Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) New England Conference Championships (1992-1993), two EIVA Division II Championships (1991 and 1993), an EIVA Open Championship (1991) and EIVA Open and Division II Runner Up positions in 1994.

Individually, Chris was the Springfield College Volleyball Rookie of the Year and the winner of the Freshman Male Athlete of the Year for Team Sports Award.  In 1992, Chris again won the Team Sport Male Athlete of the Year Award – this time as a sophomore.  He captained the team in 1993 and 1994 and in each year was voted to the EIVA Division II Championship All Tournament Teams, making a total of 6 All Tournament Teams during his four year collegiate career.   

 

Following an illustrious collegiate playing career, Chris joined the coaching ranks, where he has made his greatest mark in the game of volleyball.  In 1994 he returned to Chariho High School and became the Head Boy’s Volleyball Coach.  During the proceeding 14 years, he coached 16 All-State athletes and received Coach of the Year honors three times (1994, 1998 and 2002) until retiring from the position following the 2007 season.  While he was not coaching high school volleyball, Chris indulged his coaching passion at the collegiate level.  Between 1996 and 1999, he was Assistant Men’s Volleyball Coach at Johnson & Wales University and Head Coach from 1999 through 2002.  Most recently, Chris took on a new challenge in 2007 as Head Girl’s Volleyball Coach at Chariho High School where he immediately excelled winning Coach of the Year honors in his inaugural season.

With more than two decades of volleyball experience (including 13 years as a camp clinician) Chris Safford is an invaluable addition to our training academy staff.  Chris is Red Cross/First Aid certified and holds a B.S. degree in physical education.  He currently teaches physical education and health.

Pete Weremay

As a player, coach and volleyball official, Pete Weremay brings to us a wealth of tactical and technical expertise in both the indoor and beach games of volleyball.  With more than 15 years of volleyball experience, including 4 years with the University of Rhode Island Men’s Volleyball Team (1994-1998), Pete has established himself as one of the premier indoor volleyball players in the region.  Outdoors, Pete’s resume is equally impressive. He has more than 50 career open victories in semi-pro beach volleyball circuits up and down the east coast.  At the professional level, Pete has competed in qualifier tournaments for the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour since 2000.  In that same year, he earned a career high finish of 33rd in the AVP Sunkist Belmar Open.  Pete finished the 2007 beach season as the number one ranked beach volleyball player in New England according to the AVPNext Ranking System.

As a coach, Pete has experience at the high school and club levels, having served as Assistant Boy’s Volleyball Coach at Chariho High School from 1994 through 1998, and as Head Coach of the Rhode Island Juniors 18s Boys Team during the 1998 season.     


Pete is certified by USA Volleyball as a Division I, II & III high-school and collegiate volleyball official and is Red Cross/First Aid certified.  He holds a B.S. degree in physical education and teaches physical education and health at the middle school and high school levels.

Booh Brennan

Robert “Booh” Brennan is one of the most well-known and decorated volleyball players to ever come out of the Northeast.  An extraordinary athlete, Booh’s indoor and beach volleyball credentials are second to none in New England.  A four year player at the University of Rhode Island, Booh earned 1st Team All American Honors at the USA Volleyball Nationals and was twice voted a Collegiate Club 1st Team All American.  During the same time, Booh’s accomplishments in beach volleyball were equally extraordinary.  From 1994 through 1998, Booh compiled an incredible five-year undefeated streak on the East Coast pro beach volleyball circuit, helping him to become the all-time winningest player in New England beach volleyball history with 189 career open wins.

Outside of New England, 
Booh has competed domestically against some of the greatest pro beach volleyball players in the United States on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, with three career high finishes of 17th at the AVP Sunkist Belmar Open (1999), AVP Miller Lite Fort Myers Open (1997), and the AVP Miller Lite Championships ( Old Orchard Beach Maine) in 1996.  Internationally, Booh has competed on the FIVB international pro beach volleyball tour, earning a career high 17th place finish on the FIVB Challenger & Satellite Series in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1998.  Booh is certified by USA Volleyball as a Division I, II & III high-school and collegiate volleyball official.

Carly Dell’Ova

Carly brings over 15 years of volleyball playing and coaching experience to our training academy.  A three year collegiate player, Carly captained the Bates College Women’s Volleyball Team in the 1998 and 1999 seasons and since then has played in more than 50 New England regional indoor tournaments.  On the beach, Carly has competed at the Open Level in semi-pro beach volleyball tournaments for more than five years.  She also has extensive experience as a grass doubles tournament player.  Carly joined the volleyball coaching ranks in 2004 as the Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach at Mitchell College.

In addition to her volleyball experience, Carly has extensive experience working with youth in the Boys Club of America.  Carly holds a B.S. degree in neuroscience and a Master’s Degree in biology.  She is certified as a personal trainer by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and is currently completing her certification as a registered dietician.
